Our Story

They say that time flies when you are having fun, and that certainly seems to be the case with Toronto Family Doulas. With years of experience, hundreds of families supported, and a global pandemic which radically changed the way doulas provide support, things are certainly never dull. When Alex and Meaghan joined forces in June 2015, they could never have predicted the wild ride to come.

In 2015, Meaghan and Alex knew each other from professional circles, but it wasn't until Meaghan had experienced the type of support that Alex provided her clients that she knew the two of them could do amazing things together. Merging their businesses together under the Toronto Family Doulas banner, they set off on an adventure to provide comprehensive, professional, and unbiased support to the families of the Greater Toronto Area.

In 2016 they joined forces with their sister agency Hamilton family doulas, and in 2017 Family Doulas of Ottawa was born.

When the world changed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alex and Meaghan knew that they would need to 'pivot' in order to continue providing the support TFD had become known for. By meeting and exceeding the most rigorous public health and infection prevention guidelines, they were able to return to helping parents and babies that summer. They have continued to maintain those rigorous standards to protect the families and vulnerable clients they care for.

In 2022 there was yet more exciting change for TFD. It was in the fall of 2022 that Kaitlyn Lastoria, a doula with Toronto Family Doulas for many years, joined Alex and Meaghan as a co-owner. With an emphasis on mentorship and postpartum education and support, Kaitlyn brings her many years of dedicated care to the ownership team.

After 8 years there is one thing the team at Toronto Family Doulas has learned - things are always changing, and they can always change them for the better.

She has a passion for childbirth education, believing that preparing for birth and parenting doesn’t have to be scary. She became a doula after becoming a mother and witnessing the fighting and judgment that can be so common. Believing that all new parents should have the time, space, and support to have the birth and parenting experience they are hoping for, Meaghan focuses on helping families to make the best choice for themselves.

When Meaghan isn’t busy attending births, networking with the community, and working with new families to match them to the perfect doula, she can be found knitting, spending time with her family, and looking for new recipes that her kids might actually eat.
