Shopping Canadian for the Holidays

Welcome to A Doula’s Guide to Canadian Holiday Gifting! Our holiday blog is a little late this year (thanks to the flu!) but we would never leave you hanging. Our goal this year is to put everything in one place, so that your last minute shopping needs are easy and accessible. As well, we are limiting our suggestions to Canadian businesses because this is DEFINITELY the year to buy Canadian. So let’s get started.
Kids Clothes
The littlest ones tend to like the boxes and paper more than the gifts themselves but that doesn’t mean you can’t go all out. We are so lucky to have so many choices here in Canada when it comes to fantastic children’s stores and brands. It makes it hard to pick just a few.
Petite Nordique – while they have so many options including toys and baby gear, it is there apparel that we fall in love with every time. From pyjamas to holiday dresses, there is something for even the best dressed baby out there.
Souris Mini – This is a new brand to us but when we saw capsule wardrobes for newborns, we were hooked! Better than a layette set, these adorable collections are a perfect “starter set” for new babies.
Little & Lively – Who doesn’t love the softness of bamboo next to your baby’s skin? Our favourites are the bamboo leggings. Great stretch over the diaper and perfect for layering if you are going to be outside in the cold.
Children’s Toys
We all know that shopping for toys is the best part of the holidays, but no one wants boring toys. Don’t worry, we have got you covered with some fantastic Canadian companies that are sure to have that special something you have been searching for.
Wood Wood Toys – this brand came to our attention because of their activism and outspoken support of human rights on social media, but their products are also great! From stacking and sorting, to imaginary play, to outdoor climbing sets, this company is a fantastic place to find well built toys that will last.
Baby Joy – Looking for organic, sustainable, low/no waste, or other environmentally friendly toys? This company has you covered!
Dilly Dally Kids – Their Canadiana collection caught our eye because we love a store that supports Indigenous authors and artists. Keep an eye on their shipping deadlines though!
Go Coconut – We are kinda jealous these couches weren’t around when we were kids! A great idea for the toddler in your life, these modular couches can transform into anything your kiddo can dream up. And you can always add to your collection. Plus, made in Canada!
Gear from Birth to Preschool
Sometimes families need the gear more than the glitz and glam. We get it! Kids outgrow car seats, strollers break or don’t travel well, and gear can get worn down or just doesn’t fit the needs anymore.
West Coast Kids – WCK is always our go-to recommendation for a Canadian company that carries is ALL. No matter what you are looking for, you will probably find it here.
Well.ca – Skip Amazon this year and order from a Canadian company. We love Well.ca for all our basics. And talk about the perfect place to fill baby’s first stocking.
Macklem’s – We love a store that stands the test of time and Macklem’s is it! They have been around since 1945 and they are amazing. Whether you are ordering a whole nursery set, or have a specific brand in mind, Macklem’s makes it easy to find.
For the Expectant Parent
Let’s be real, being pregnant during the holidays can be amazing (no one bats an eye if you take a second slice of pie), but it can also be hard to feel your best. So you definitely deserve to be pampered.
Carry Maternity – a local maternity boutique in Toronto, we love Carry’s. Whether you want casual outfits, work appropriate clothes, or a New Year’s outfit that will stop everyone in their tracks, Carry Maternity has you covered.
Rocky Mountain Soap – Your skin changes in unpredictable ways when you are pregnant. Which is why (appropriate) skin care is so important. Beat the breakouts, calm the ruddiness, and keep your skin soft and smooth with any of the fantastic options from Rocky Mountain Soap.
Preggo Box – Pre-made or customized care boxes for the mama-to-be in your life! Whether you pick a box by trimester or put something unique together, this is a great way to spoil someone.
For the Family
We aren’t going to list stores or companies in this one. Instead, we are going to focus on things that are going to make a difference for the whole family. And our top suggestions here are support and experiences!
Doula Support – whether prenatal or postpartum, families can always use a helping hand. We offer gift certificates to suit every need and budget.
The Toronto Zoo – A family membership to the Zoo is a gift that will keep giving all year long. One of the best places for families with young kids to hang out, this will be something the family uses all the time.
Other Memberships – The Science Centre may be gone but there are still so many other places where a family membership can mean hours of fun and entertainment. Check out the Royal Ontario Museum, Ripley’s Aquarium, or Legoland.
We try to post a doula’s guide to holiday gifting every year. And this year is no exception. We could probably keep this post going for a million years, but the holidays aren’t that far away. Remember to buy Canadian and shop small when you can. It makes such a difference to small business owners!
