5 ways to increase your milk supply

milk supply

At Toronto Family Doulas, we know that a lot of new parents are worried about breastfeeding.

Is breastfeeding going well? Is my baby getting enough milk? Should I supplement with formula? We will always support you in your feeding choices for your baby and we always recommend checking in with your baby’s doctor if you are worried about weight gain. We also know that there are some things you can do at home to try and boost your milk supply.

1) Eat oatmeal

Oatmeal, or foods containing oats, are considered a galactagogue. This means it is believed to increase milk production.

2) Skin to Skin

Even if your baby isn’t so little anymore, snuggling with your baby close can stimulate milk production. This can look like cuddles on the couch or perhaps wearing your baby facing in. Cheek to chest is still skin to skin.

3) Hydrate

Producing breastmilk can deplete your body’s resources very quickly. Making sure you are hydrated is a big part of that. If you are drinking plenty of water and still struggling with milk supply, try a drink with electrolytes like a sports drink or coconut water.

4) Lactation cookies

There are lots of options and lots of flavours here! You can choose a store bought cookie, or make your own. You may have to hit a specialty store for some of the ingredients, but these cookies can pack a powerful nutritional punch. And who doesn’t want an excuse to eat cookies?

5) Take a Nursing Vacation

This method definitely takes more time than others. Set aside 24-48 hours where you can stay at home. No visitors, no errands. Keep you baby in just their diaper and consider going topless for extra skin to skin. The turn on Netflix and snuggle in with your baby to nurse on demand.

If all of these methods fail to increase your supply, it might be time to talk to an IBCLC or your child’s doctor about herbal and medicinal ways to increase your milk production. We also encourage expectant families to join us for our November Newborn Care and Breastfeeding 101. Let the fabulous Timea Szalay help you before trouble even starts.
