I Couldn’t Have Done It Without You
“I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Every doula hears that sentence at some point or another. Birth or postpartum doula, it doesn’t really matter. We are with our clients during some of the most meaningful, intense, and exciting moments of their lives. Regardless of what is happening, what kind of birth, what goal or achievement postpartum, doulas are there as helpers and witnesses.
But we want to tell you a secret.
You absolutely could do it without us.
We aren’t a need. We aren’t necessary. We love being with you when you discover that power. Maybe, once in a while, we give you a nudge in the right direction towards that power.
Doulas are there to help. We are a hand to hold, a cold cloth, a comforting word. We are a shoulder to cry on, a handy burp cloth, a hot cup of coffee, and a willing set of arms for a cranky baby.
We will send you off for a nap, make you a meal, wash the dishes.
We will answer our phones in the middle of the night. We will respond to your texts, even the ones you think are probably a weird question. We will provide you with resources that you probably could have found on your own, by why spend the time? You are busy preparing for your baby.
Doulas are important. We love what we do and we want to keep being there to support you. But, without a doubt, you are strong, powerful, and capable.
